sometimes it seems, as evidenced in the previous 2 posts, that i think best on paper. while i can never quite explain why, writing to me is a safe and trusted friend, a way for me to express things, and think them through in a sense. most often, what i write is seemingly unrelated to what is in my head, and yet i still come away from it feeling like i have expressed the very core of who i am. the beauty of words over film, i think, is that they are much more subjective. a picture is what it is, and you can't change it. once you take it, it is finished. its so objective in a sense. it is somewhat one dimensional. words, however, can have many more dimensions, or so it seems to me. i can twist and shape and form my words so that even if i make a mistake along the way, i can still arrive where i want to be. writing is a much more fluent art, subject to revision and editing. photos on the other hand, are not. what seems perfect at the release of the shutter will often turn out to be nothing of the sort. the vision in my brains often fails to make it to the film. and this glaring ommision of who i am in what i am trying to do is painfully obvious for all to see, but most especially me. it is quite difficult, as well, to find something around that represents what i wish to convey. words are always at my disposal, free for the choosing. the light need not be right, the conditions just so. writing is anytime, anywhere. i can form any picture i want with the words i choose. and because it is so subjective, it is not nearly as open to the criticism of others, which is good for a self concious "artist" for myself. photography is my love, but writing is my best friend. and in the end, i believe that it is best friends who are worth the most investment.

snapshots
colours, photos in my head
i see the world in snapshots
its how i relate, i cope
somtimes life is black and white
and sometimes it is colour
and every once in a great while,
inexplicably, i capture a sliver
of the world around me
in a single photo
in a snapshot

the mind inside my eye
can see with tragic clarity
blue is blue, green is green
the bane of my existence
lies in the mis-translations
of these all too vivid pictures
i lack the quality and quantity
of skill of any kind
these perfect works, left behind
are doomed to death inside my mind

The Brain is Wider Than the Sky
The brain is wider than the sky,
For, put them side by side,
The one the other will inlcude
With ease, and you beside.
The brain is deeper than the sea,
For, hold them, blue to blue,
The one the other will absorb,
As sponges, buckets do.
The brain is just the weight of God,
For, lift them, pound for pound,
And they will differ, if they do,
As syllable from sound.
-Emily Dickinson-
